Mongol Empire Treasures Tour Europe: Ulaanbaatar's History Museums Guide
Mongolia's Mongol Empire treasures are on show in Leeds until 1 November 2026 and in Berlin until 18 April 2027, but the deepest collections stay in Ulaanbaatar. On 28 October 2026 the Chinggis Khaan National Museum hosts an international conference on the empire's diplomacy, a good moment to plan a visit to Ulaanbaatar's three history museums: the Chinggis Khaan National Museum, the National Museum of Mongolia and the Bogd Khan Palace Museum.

Why are Ulaanbaatar history museums in the news?
The Chinggis Khaan National Museum reported on 28 June 2026 that "Genghis Khan: How the Mongols Changed the World" opened at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, UK, on 25 June 2026 with 437 artefacts in 255 sets. They were lent by seven Mongolian institutions, including the National Museum of Mongolia. The Leeds show closes on 1 November 2026.
In Germany, Berlin's State Museums opened "Genghis Khan and the World of the Mongols" at the James-Simon-Galerie on 21 October 2026; it runs until 18 April 2027. And on 25 October 2026 President Khurelsukh viewed Mongolian Green Tara and White Tara statues at the National Museum of Finland, together with the work of Finnish linguist Gustaf John Ramstedt, who worked in Mongolia in 1900 and 1909 and collected more than 60 Buddhist thangka paintings, Montsame reported.
At home, Montsame's "This Week in Mongolia" lists the conference "Diplomatic Policy of the Great Mongol Empire: History and Modern Times" at the Chinggis Khaan National Museum on 28 October, followed by Capital City Day on 29 October.
What will you see at the Chinggis Khaan National Museum?
The Chinggis Khaan National Museum tells the story of the Mongol Empire floor by floor. According to the museum's website, it was established in 2019 and holds more than 10,000 original exhibits. The halls climb through time: ancient empires on the 3rd floor, the ancient nomadic empires on the 4th, the Great Mongol Empire on the 5th, the khanates on the 6th, the aristocracy and descendants of Chinggis Khaan on the 7th, "Mongolia and the World" on the 8th, and the Chinggis Khaan Grand Hall of Honor on the 9th.
The visitor page gives winter hours (15 September to 14 May) of 09:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:00, and says the museum is closed every Tuesday. English-language guided tours last 60 minutes and must be booked by phone on +976 7021 2222; a private tour for one to nine people is listed at MNT 100,000 (as of 27 October 2026).
What does the National Museum of Mongolia cover?
The National Museum of Mongolia covers the whole sweep, from the first nomads to the 20th century. Its website describes a permanent exhibition, "History of the Nomads", in nine halls, and a collection of more than 60,000 items. It lists opening hours of 09:00 to 18:00 every day and 10:00 to 16:00 on public holidays.
Until 19 November 2026 the museum also runs a temporary exhibition on life under socialism. We covered it in our report on the National Museum's socialism exhibition, and it pairs well with the empire halls.

Why visit the Bogd Khan Palace Museum?
The Bogd Khan Palace Museum is the home of Mongolia's last monarch, and its buildings are original. The World Monuments Fund says the winter palace was built between 1893 and 1903, completed in 1905 near the Tuul River, and has seven temples arranged around two courtyards. It became a museum after the Bogd Khan died in 1924 and survived the destruction of temples and monasteries in the late 1930s.
The palace hosts seasonal programmes: in May 2026, Montsame reported on "The Power of Compassion", an exhibition of more than 30 rare Avalokiteshvara artefacts, including a statue made by the Bogd Khan's decree in 1911.
