The National Museum of Mongolia in Ulaanbaatar has opened a new exhibition on the country's socialist decades, "Evening Museum: Let's Travel Through Socialism", which runs from 10 October to 19 November 2026. It looks at everyday life, industry, science and culture in the Mongolian People's Republic between 1950 and 1990. What is the National Museum of Mongolia exhibition about?

The exhibition covers the Mongolian People's Republic from 1950 to 1990. According to the museum's exhibition page, it brings together objects and collections on agriculture, industry, culture and education, science, construction and infrastructure, foreign relations and the social life of the period.

The organisers frame it as a way to understand and learn from that history, not only to look back on it with nostalgia. The Mongolian title is "Үдшийн музей – Социализмаар аялцгаая", which Mongolia's national news agency renders as "Evening Museum: Let's Take a Journey Through Socialism".

When did it open, and who was there?

The exhibition opened on the evening of 9 October 2026 with about 200 guests, Montsame reported. Museum Director D. Otgonsüren opened the event, and greetings came from B. Bat-Erdene, State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, Tourism and Youth, and N. Enkhbayar, the former President of Mongolia who now chairs the council of the planned New Kharkhorum city.

The museum's own news report adds that the opening included a symphony performance by the Military Song and Dance Academic Ensemble and a staged piece by actors from the State Academic Drama Theatre.

What are the opening hours and ticket prices?

The museum is normally open from 09:00 to 18:00 every day, and from 10:00 to 16:00 on public holidays, according to the National Museum of Mongolia website (as of 12 October 2026). During its "Evening Museum – 7 Days" event, from 10 to 16 October 2026, it stays open until 20:00.

Prices need a quick check before you go. The museum's general price list shows 20,000 tugrik for adults, 10,000 tugrik for students, free entry for children and free guided tours. The opening reports, however, give the exhibition ticket as 10,000 tugrik. The museum sells tickets through ticket.mn, so confirm the current price there or at the desk.

Is the exhibition worth it for foreign visitors?

Yes, especially if you combine it with the permanent galleries. The museum holds more than 60,000 objects in nine halls that follow Mongolia's story from the earliest nomads to the 20th century, including halls on the Mongol Empire, traditional culture, Socialist Mongolia and Democratic Mongolia.

One practical note: on the exhibition page the description is only in Mongolian. The museum does offer an audio guide and QR-code descriptions, and its guided tours are free, so ask at the entrance what is available in English on the day.

What else is on in Ulaanbaatar this autumn?

Several other cultural events overlap with the exhibition. "The Wind of the Great Ocean Across the Steppe: Raphael and Bernini" stays at the Chinggis Khaan National Museum until 1 November 2026, Montsame confirms; we covered it in our Raphael and Bernini guide.

Montsame's weekly events listing for 12 to 18 October 2026 also includes:

  • 13 October: an exhibition of work by Mongolia's first women photographers at the General Authority for Archives.

  • 13 October: the State Academic Theatre of Drama opens its autumn season.

  • 17 October: the 18th Ulaanbaatar International Film Festival opens.

  • 17 October: "Spaces of Mongolia", an eight-movement ensemble performance at the State Philharmonic concert hall.
