Halal Food and Muslim-Friendly Travel in Mongolia: Planning a 2027 Trip
Halal travel in Mongolia in 2027 is easier to plan than the menus suggest. Malaysia's JAKIM recognised a Mongolian halal certification body in 2024, Mongolia's own standards agency holds a halal accreditation valid into late 2027, and Ulaanbaatar has a mosque serving its Kazakh Muslim community. Malaysian, Singaporean and UAE citizens can stay up to 30 days without a visa, and MIAT flies nonstop from Singapore this winter.
Key facts
JAKIM: Recognised one Mongolian halal certification body in 2024 (announced 18 Oct 2024; body not named in reports)

Mosque: Konya Culture Center and Mosque, Nalaikh district, Ulaanbaatar; opened April 2013 by TİKA

What is new on halal certification for 2027 trips?
The biggest change for Malaysian travellers is that Malaysia now recognises a halal certifier in Mongolia. On 18 October 2024, Malaysia's Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living said that JAKIM had recognised five more foreign halal certification bodies that year, "one each from Brazil, Mongolia and Uruguay" and two from Russia, RTM reported. The amendment was gazetted on 4 October 2024 and took effect the next day, bringing the total to 88 recognised bodies in 49 countries, according to Malay Mail.
Neither report names the Mongolian body, so ask a supplier which certificate it holds rather than assuming. On the road, what counts is the meat your cook actually buys.
Who certifies halal food in Mongolia, and for how long?
The state certifier is the Mongolian Agency for Standardization and Metrology (MASM), and its halal accreditation runs for four years from 20 December 2023. Montsame reports that the agency received accreditation certificate No. 0089 for halal food certification on that date, meeting the requirements of the GCC Accreditation Center. The certificate was formally presented in May 2024, when Montsame wrote that Mongolia can now export meat to Gulf countries.
MASM's halal work also has a Turkish link. Türkiye's Halal Accreditation Agency (HAK) signed a memorandum with MASM in Ankara on 13 March 2023 to cooperate on halal quality infrastructure and OIC/SMIIC standards. Our earlier guide to Mongolian halal food covers the first certified companies and the dishes to know.
Where can I pray in Ulaanbaatar?
Ulaanbaatar's best-documented working mosque is the one opened in April 2013 by Türkiye's aid agency TİKA. TİKA reports that it built the mosque, part of the Konya Culture Center, with the Dosteli Foundation in an area of the capital mainly inhabited by Kazakh Muslims, and that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan opened it and performed Friday prayers there. The building, also known as Nalaikh Mosque, stands in Nalaikh district, east of the city centre, and opened on 12 April 2013, according to Wikipedia's entry on Nalaikh Mosque.
Nalaikh is a drive from central Ulaanbaatar, so plan Friday prayer into the day rather than fitting it in between sights. Your guide can also stop at prayer times on long countryside drives.
For a region where Muslim custom is the norm, go west: Montsame's About Mongolia guide says that "about 90% of Bayan-Ulgii's population are Kazakh, almost all of them Muslim." The province is also the home of Kazakh eagle hunting.

How do meals work on a halal tour?
On our halal tours the meals are planned before you arrive and cooked for you on the road. As our Halal Mongolia Tour page explains, you tell us your halal preference and any other needs by email; we buy from local halal butcheries and shops, arrange meals from halal restaurants in Ulaanbaatar, and in the countryside a dedicated guide prepares your meals. The tour includes a Muslim-friendly guide and driver.

Planning from Malaysia, Singapore or the Gulf?
Most Malaysian, Singaporean and UAE travellers need no visa for a short trip. The Consular Department of Mongolia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists 30 days visa-free for all passports of Malaysia, Singapore, the UAE, Türkiye and Uzbekistan, and 90 days for Kazakhstan (checked 3 November 2026). For Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain the exemptions cover only diplomatic, official or special passports, and Qatar is not listed, so ordinary passport holders from those countries are not covered by these exemptions and should arrange a visa before travelling.
For a winter trip, MIAT Mongolian Airlines flies Singapore–Ulaanbaatar nonstop twice weekly from 15 December 2026 to 17 January 2027 on a Boeing 767-300ER, AeroRoutes reported on 29 September 2026: OM1724 leaves Singapore at 19:25 and lands at 02:55 the next day. We found no nonstop Kuala Lumpur service announced for this winter, so travellers from Malaysia either connect in Singapore or fly one-stop; our Malaysia to Mongolia travel guide covers the routings.
What this means for your trip
Say how strictly you keep halal. Tell us at booking whether you need certified meat only, so we can source it before you land.
Plan Friday in Ulaanbaatar. Leave a slot for the mosque in Nalaikh, or pair it with a Ulaanbaatar City Tour (1 day).
Go west for Kazakh culture. The Eagle Hunting Mongolia Tour (5 days) visits Ölgii and the Altai Tavan Bogd mountains.
Book the Singapore flights early. The MIAT nonstop runs only from 15 December 2026 to 17 January 2027; see our six-day winter trip from Singapore.
