How many tourists has Mongolia welcomed in 2026 so far?
By the end of October 2026, Mongolia had welcomed about 925,600 foreign tourists, more than in any previous year. The state news agency Montsame reported on 30 October 2026 that preliminary figures from the Mongolian Tourism Association showed 919,104 tourists from 1 January to 29 October, which it called a new historical record for the sector.
The Mongolia Tourism Organization's statistics page, checked on 3 November 2026, lists 925,588 arrivals "up to November" (January to October) with a 21% increase, plus 1,923 arrivals on 1 November, for 927,511 so far this year. The page counts foreign nationals crossing the border, excluding those coming to study, work or live in Mongolia.
The record had already fallen in early October: on 7 October, ikon.mn reported 856,636 arrivals since 1 January, passing the 847,170 recorded in the whole of 2025.
Will Mongolia reach 1 million tourists in 2026?
Mongolia has not yet reached its 1 million target, and no official forecast says whether it will. Montsame put progress at 91.9% on 29 October, with 80,896 tourists still needed; using the Mongolia Tourism Organization's figure of 927,511 on 1 November, about 72,500 remain.
For comparison, Xinhua reported on 30 October 2025, citing the Mongolian Tourism Organization, that 751,879 foreign tourists had visited Mongolia so far that year. The year then ended at 847,170, so roughly 95,000 arrivals came in the last two months of 2025, by our own arithmetic from those two published figures. Winter is the quiet season, and November and December numbers depend on flights, festivals and the weather.

Where are Mongolia's tourists coming from?
Russia, China and South Korea remain Mongolia's three biggest markets in 2026, with Japan next. In the first six days of October, ikon.mn counted 7,210 visitors from Russia, 2,768 from South Korea, 2,025 from China and 628 from Japan. Montsame's 30 October report does not break the new record down by country.
Interest from further afield is visible too. At ITM Mongolia 2026, the international tourism expo held in Ulaanbaatar from 23 to 25 October, Montsame reported more than 20,000 visitors and participants from Russia, China, South Korea, India, Japan, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates. Dundgovi province, the expo's partner aimag, announced 2027 as the "Year of Visiting Dundgovi".
Planning from Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong or Japan?
Travellers from these four places keep their visa-free stays into 2027, because they rest on standing agreements. Mongolia's Consular Department lists visa-free stays of up to 30 days for Singapore, Malaysia and Japan passports and up to 14 days for Hong Kong SAR passports (checked 3 November 2026).
MIAT Mongolian Airlines plans twice-weekly Singapore–Ulaanbaatar flights on a Boeing 767-300ER from 15 December 2026 to 17 January 2027, according to AeroRoutes.
Japan was Mongolia's fourth-largest market in early October, and Malaysian and Japanese exhibitors took part in ITM Mongolia 2026.

What this means for your trip
Record numbers mostly show in summer; a winter trip is still quiet, but 2027 is worth planning early.
Book summer 2027 early. With arrivals up 21% this year, popular routes such as our Grand Tour Mongolia Route (14 days) and the Amazing Gobi Desert Tour (7 days) fill first in July and August. Compare routes of nine days or more on our Mongolia long tours page, or every desert itinerary on The Gobi Desert page.
Go beyond the classic loop. Our Altai Tavan Bogd (10 days) tour runs from Khovd to the Potanin Glacier, an eagle hunter family in Bayan-Ölgii and Uvs Lake. The Eastern Mongolia (9 days) route takes in Khukh Nuur, Baldan Bereeven Monastery, Dadal and Dariganga, and Mongolia Photo Tours (3 days) covers Khustai National Park, Khugnu Khan and the Elsen Tasarkhai dunes. For autumn in the far west, see our Eagle Festival in Mongolia page.
Consider winter. A Mongolia Winter Tour (1 day) with dog sledging in Terelj works well around a short city stay.
Check your visa status for 2027. The 30-day exemption for 34 countries, including the UK, most EU countries, Australia and New Zealand, still ends on 31 December 2026 per the Consular Department, and South Korea's 90-day exemption runs to the same date. As of 3 November 2026, neither the Consular Department nor the Immigration Agency of Mongolia has published a 2027 decision. Our Mongolia visa 2027 update explains who is affected, and if you do need a visa, our visa service can help with the paperwork.
