Mongolia Visa-Free Entry Ends 31 Dec 2026: What It Means for 2027 Trips

Short answer: if you hold a passport from one of 34 countries (most of the EU, the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Australia and New Zealand), you can still visit Mongolia for up to 30 days without a visa, but only until 31 December 2026. As of 23 September 2026, the government has not announced whether this exemption will continue into 2027. If you're planning a 2027 trip, budget for Mongolia's e-visa and keep an eye on the official announcements.

What the government decided, and until when

On 31 December 2025, just as the previous exemption was about to expire, Mongolia's Cabinet renewed visa-free entry for tourists from 34 countries. The Immigration Agency of Mongolia says the exemption runs until the end of 2026 and applies to trips made for tourism, of up to 30 days. The UK Foreign Office gives the same end date in its entry requirements for Mongolia: British travelers can visit for tourism for up to 30 days without a visa "until 31 December 2026".

The countries covered are 32 European states plus Australia and New Zealand: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Mongolia's embassy in Geneva adds that visitors under the exemption can extend their stay once, by up to another 30 days.

Travelling before 31 December 2026? Here's the checklist

  • Passport validity: at least six months beyond your arrival date. This is the rule that catches the most travelers out.

  • Purpose: the exemption covers tourism. Business, work, study or volunteering trips need the right visa category.

  • Length of stay: up to 30 days. Plan your flights around it and don't overstay; fines have to be paid before you can leave.

  • Address registration: accommodation providers must register foreign guests with the Immigration Agency within 48 hours of arrival. Hotels and ger camps do this for you. If you're staying with friends or travelling independently, you have to register yourself.

Autumn is a good time to use the exemption while it lasts. The Golden Eagle Festival in Bayan-Ölgii takes place in early October, the steppe turns gold, and Ulaanbaatar's cultural season is in full swing. Our month-by-month season guide covers what to expect.

Planning for 2027: what we know and what we don't

The exemption has been renewed one year at a time. That gives travelers flexibility, but it also means nobody can promise what the rules will be on 1 January 2027. Last year the renewal was confirmed on 31 December itself. Passport Index pointed out at the time that operators and travelers were planning 2026 trips without a firm answer.

There are good reasons to expect Mongolia to keep courting European travelers. Mongolia Tourism Organization reported, citing UN Tourism's World Tourism Barometer, that international arrivals in the first nine months of 2025 were 44% above 2019 levels and that tourism revenue grew 15% year on year. Europe is a priority market. In mid-September, Mongolian operators took part in IFTM Top Resa 2026 in Paris, France's leading travel trade show, and MTO noted that 7,689 French travelers visited Mongolia in 2025. Still, an expectation isn't a decision, and we won't present it as one.

Here's what we recommend if your trip is in 2027:

  • Book on dates, not on the visa rule. Peak-season ger camps and domestic flights fill up months ahead, whatever the entry policy turns out to be.

  • Know your fallback. If the exemption isn't renewed, travelers from these countries can apply online through Mongolia's official e-visa portal, evisa.mn, which has issued tourist e-visas since 2021. Approved e-visas arrive by email with a QR code.

  • Allow a buffer. If you do need an e-visa, apply several weeks before departure rather than the week you fly, and keep a printed copy.

  • Check again in December. We'll update this post as soon as the Cabinet publishes its decision for 2027.

Not on the list? Your rules are different

Many travelers enter Mongolia under long-standing bilateral agreements, not the temporary 34-country exemption, so the 31 December date doesn't affect them. United States citizens, for example, can stay up to 90 days for tourism or business without a visa, according to the US State Department. Rules for Asian passports vary by country. Our full Mongolia visa guide explains each case. Always check with your nearest Mongolian embassy before you book.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still travel to Mongolia without a visa in 2026?

Yes, if you hold a passport from one of the 34 exempted countries and you're travelling for tourism. You can stay up to 30 days, and the exemption applies until 31 December 2026.

Will the visa exemption continue in 2027?

Nothing has been announced as of 23 September 2026. The last renewal was decided on 31 December 2025, so the answer may not come until the end of the year. Plan with the e-visa as your fallback.

What if my trip starts in December 2026 and ends in January 2027?

Entry rules are generally assessed on the day you arrive, but because the new-year rules aren't known yet, confirm with a Mongolian embassy or with us before you finalise flights that span the change.

Do I need to register when I arrive?

Yes. Foreign visitors have to be registered with the Immigration Agency within 48 hours. Hotels, ger camps and tour operators do this for their guests. Independent travelers staying privately have to do it themselves.
