Best Season for Mongolia Tours: Month-by-Month 2026 Guide
The best season for Mongolia tours is summer, from mid-June to late August, when the steppe turns green, daytime temperatures are comfortable, and the Naadam Festival fills the country with wrestling, horse racing and archery. September is a beautiful, quieter alternative, and winter has a magic of its own if you come prepared.
That is the short answer we give travelers almost every week at Enza Tours, our locally owned company in Ulaanbaatar. The longer answer depends on what you want from Mongolia — festivals, horse trekking, the Gobi, or simply having the countryside to yourself. Here is how we would explain it to a friend planning a trip.
Why summer is Mongolia's peak season
From mid-June through August, most of Mongolia enjoys warm days, cool nights and very long daylight hours. The countryside ger camps are all open, rivers are full, and nomadic families are in their summer pastures making dairy — which means guests get to see herding life at its liveliest. If your dream is sleeping in a ger, riding horses and drinking fresh airag with a herder family, this is the window.
July is the busiest month because of Naadam, Mongolia's biggest festival, held every year around July 11–13 in Ulaanbaatar and in smaller towns across the country. It is a wonderful time to visit, but flights, camps and guides get booked out well in advance. Our Naadam Festival travel guide explains how to plan around it.
Mongolia's travel seasons month by month
Spring: April to early June
Spring is unpredictable — windy, sometimes dusty, with big temperature swings. It is also when baby animals arrive, and herders welcome the first visitors of the year. The Gobi is at its mildest in May and early June, before the midsummer heat, and you will share the famous sights with far fewer people.
Summer: mid-June to August
Peak season for good reason: green steppe, open camps, festivals and the full countryside experience. Short afternoon rains in late July and August keep the grasslands green rather than spoiling trips. Expect the Gobi to be hot at midday and plan sightseeing for mornings and evenings.
Autumn: September and October
Many of our returning guests deliberately choose September. The air is crystal clear, larch forests turn gold, and the main routes are quiet again. Nights get properly cold by late September. In western Mongolia, the famous Golden Eagle Festival of the Kazakh eagle hunters takes place in autumn, typically in early October — one of the most photogenic events in the country.
Winter: November to March
Winter is harsh — Ulaanbaatar regularly sits far below freezing — but it is also when Mongolia feels most otherworldly. Frozen Lake Khuvsgul hosts an ice festival in early March, Tsagaan Sar (Lunar New Year) is celebrated in family homes, and snow-covered Terelj is stunning on a clear day. With proper clothing and a guide who knows winter driving, it is absolutely doable.
Matching the season to your trip
Gobi Desert: May–June or September, when temperatures are gentler than midsummer.
Horse trekking and nomadic family stays: mid-June to early September, while families are in summer pastures.
Day trips from Ulaanbaatar: run nearly year-round — our one-day Khustai National Park tour to see wild takhi horses is popular from spring through autumn.
Festivals: Naadam in July, the eagle festival in autumn, and ice and camel festivals in late winter.
A local's honest advice on timing
Do not be afraid of the shoulder seasons. Some of our best trips happen in early June and September: the light is better for photography, camps are calmer, and itineraries are more flexible. Whatever month you choose, pack layers — Mongolian weather can serve four seasons in one day. For the bigger planning picture, start with our complete Mongolia travel guide.
FAQ: best time to visit Mongolia
Is winter too cold for a Mongolia tour?
No, but it is a different kind of trip. City sightseeing, Terelj, and festival visits work well in winter with the right gear. Long countryside circuits are better left for the warm months.
How far ahead should I book a July Naadam trip?
As early as you can — ideally several months. July is the one time of year when accommodation in Ulaanbaatar and good guides genuinely sell out.
Which season is most budget-friendly?
Generally the shoulder and winter months, when demand is lower and itineraries are easier to customize. Summer festival weeks are the most expensive time to travel.
